You can grab a feed if you want: Atom or RSS. If you have a LiveJournal account (it might also work with OpenID), and you use a feed reader that supports authenticated feeds (my reader of choice, Google Reader, unfortunately doesn’t), you can get an authenticated feed (Atom or RSS) to access friends-only posts as usual.
