Of The Conan Chronicles

I’m not sure how Robert E. Howard’s Conan stories ever gained such lasting popularity. They are glaringly racist, blatantly sexist, and poorly written: It’s as though Howard had read Strunk and White’s famous Elements of Style and defiantly set out to break their every precept. On top of all that, the stories are terribly repetitive. I’ve read the first half of the “Fantasy Masterworks” collection several times, chiefly in a morbid attempt to figure out why anybody likes it; thus far I’ve not been successful.
